Hunter Park & Turkey Mountain related?

Tulsa police are investigating an attempted rape at Hunter Park late Thursday night — an incident they say bears unsettling similarities to the recent rape at Turkey Mountain.

“We are not ruling out the possibility that this is the same suspect,” Tulsa Police Captain Richard Meulenberg confirmed.

Just days earlier, on August 18, a woman reported being attacked on the Turkey Mountain trails around 10 p.m. She told investigators she had gone to the park to admire the downtown skyline when a man assaulted her, ripping off her clothing and raping her.

“She fought, she threw rocks, then she ran out leaving some clothing behind. We were able to go recover that. She ran and the suspect ran a different direction,” Meulenberg said.

Police believe the attack was random. They are still searching for surveillance footage and waiting on DNA evidence to provide answers. The suspect is only described as a “larger male, six foot to six foot three.”

“We hate to know there’s a sexual predator out there. It could be anybody right now,” Meulenberg added.

The rape at Turkey Mountain was the second violent attack there in under a month. At the end of July, police arrested Jesse Brown after he allegedly stabbed a woman several times in the face while she was hiking.

While police stress that random attacks are rare, the back-to-back incidents have rattled the community.

“You figure between these two incidents and well before the last one, thousands of people have been there without any problems — but that’s not going to dissuade how people feel about it,” Meulenberg said.

For many, Turkey Mountain no longer feels like the safe outdoor escape it once was.

Melissa Armstrong, who rides her bike there several times a week, says she no longer comes alone.

“It’s scary. It scares me to even want to come out here alone, something that I used to do,” she said. “I still want to come out here, I still want to enjoy what Tulsa has to offer — but now I have to do it with a partner.”

Armstrong now keeps her phone close and turns back at the first sign that something doesn’t feel right.

Less than a week after the rape at Turkey Mountain, police were called to Hunter Park for an attempted rape — leaving many Tulsans fearful of visiting any of the city’s public parks.

In an effort to restore safety, Tulsa police say they are increasing patrols around Turkey Mountain, deploying helicopters, drones, and extra officers. They urge park-goers to stay alert, avoid headphones, and carry something that makes noise, like a whistle.

Anyone who was at either park and saw something suspicious, or anyone who has video footage, is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS. Investigators stress that even the smallest detail could help break open the case.

For women in Tulsa, these cases are not just headlines — they are reminders of the constant need for vigilance in spaces that should feel safe. What should be a simple evening walk, a jog, or a bike ride now comes with an unspoken checklist: bring a partner, keep the phone ready, carry a whistle, stay in the light, and never let your guard down.

Public parks are meant to be places of freedom and peace, but for many women in Tulsa right now, they have become yet another place where safety feels uncertain.
